Reason Speakeasy: David Bier and Bryan Caplan

January 21, 2025 @ 7:00 pm 9:30 pm

The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy in an age of intellectual conformity and groupthink. The event doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview With Nick Gillespie, hosted by Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie.

This month’s guests are two of the nation’s most notable proponents of immigration liberalization, David Bier and Bryan Caplan, who will join Nick for a timely discussion about the state of U.S. immigration policy in 2025. They will discuss the implications of the incoming Trump administration’s immigration proposals, and make the libertarian case for why more immigration will make America great (again).

David Bier is the director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, where he focuses on legal immigration, border security, and interior enforcement. His research has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court and multiple federal appeals courts, and he has testified before House and Senate committees on several occasions.

Bryan Caplan is a professor of economics at George Mason University and a New York Times bestselling author. His books include The Myth of the Rational Voter, Selfish Reasons To Have More Kids, The Case Against Education, and Open Borders. He is also the editor and chief writer for Bet On It on Substack.

The Reason Speakeasy will be hosted at Sovereign House, located at 185 E Broadway on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. (Please note the different location from past Reason Speakeasy gatherings.) Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the discussion with Bryan and David will begin at 7:30 p.m., followed by audience Q&A. Food and drinks will be served.
