About the Role

Managing Reason employees is a bit like herding cats: They have strong personalities, reject authoritarianism, and love lasers.

If you love free minds and free markets and have experience managing people working on various priorities, mediums, and timelines, Reason wants to hire you. We need someone who can help us get the most out of our experienced and talented writers and video producers. The ideal candidate has management experience, a journalism background, and a good sense of what makes a great Reason story appealing to a mass audience. If you want to help us answer this question, you’ll be a great fit: “What needs to be covered now, this week, or this month, by whom, in what form, with what headline and what lede?”

The duties of this role are semiflexible and may be molded to the skills and experience of the person hired. This position reports to Managing Editor Jason Russell. Someone excited to work in our vibrant Washington, D.C., office is strongly preferred, but not required. Those wishing to work virtually are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as direct supervisor to a team of Reason staffers
  • Help content creators juggle competing priorities
  • Assign stories as needed
  • Help line edit or copy edit written features for web and print
  • Provide input on short- and long-term coverage needs and manage the editing process to completion
  • Provide input on the marketable aspects (headlines, images, and ledes) of feature articles and videos
  • Create content for Reason as needed

Qualifications

  • Management experience
  • Experience line editing and copy editing written articles (long-form or short-form)
  • Strong leadership and decision making skills, with the ability to guide and motivate others
  • Solid grasp of journalistic practices
  • Sharp organizational skills and an obsessive attention to detail
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and track multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and provide constructive feedback
  • Alignment with Reason’s mission
  • An in-depth understanding of politics and public policy from a libertarian worldview
