The International Harm Reduction Roundtable is a monthly virtual gathering that connects harm reduction experts, researchers, practitioners, and advocates from across the globe. With members representing over 15 countries, our network brings together voices from public health, academia, policy, and community-based organizations to share knowledge and drive meaningful change.
Each month, participants join via Zoom to explore a theme relevant to harm reduction. Sessions feature expert speakers who share research findings, on-the-ground experiences, and practical tools. Every call includes a moderated discussion under Chatham House Rules, meaning that the conversation is not recorded and any commentary can’t be attributed directly to you, creating a trusted space for open and honest dialogue.
To strengthen collaboration, members also connect through:
- A shared Google Drive of resources
- A WhatsApp group for updates, peer support, and real-time questions
- Abstract submissions that guide speaker selection and ensure diverse perspectives
Our Goals
The International Harm Reduction Roundtable is built on three core commitments:
- Global collaboration – bridging regional differences and sharing innovations across borders
- Implementation support – equipping members with practical models and peer-driven solutions
- Tangible action – inspiring participants to launch new programs, align regional efforts, and build coalitions of their own
Our Story
The International Harm Reduction Roundtable was co-founded by Layal Bou Harfouch of the Reason Foundation and Mark Gilman, a United Kingdom harm reduction leader and consultant. They are supported by a team of research associates who help coordinate the conversations and resources behind the scenes, including Catherine Campbell, Jack Hayes, and Kelly Holman.
Impact
Our members consistently share how meaningful this space has become for harm reduction efforts:
- A participant in Nigeria launched their first regional harm reduction program after connecting with peers through the group.
- Surveys highlight that many members see this as one of the few spaces where they feel supported by a global community.
