Reason Speakeasy: Musa al-Gharbi

October 24 @ 7:00 pm 9:30 pm

We’re excited to announce the next Reason Speakeasy on Thursday, October 24, featuring a discussion with Stony Brook University and Heterodox Academy sociologist Musa al-Gharbi who will discuss his forthcoming book We Have Never Been Woke: The Cultural Contradictions of a New Elite. The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy. The event doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie.

We Have Never Been Woke examines how a new progressive elite uses the language of social justice to gain more power and status—without actually helping the marginalized or disadvantaged. This is a cutting and deeply researched critique of how the leaders of our educational, legal, media, NGO, and advocacy institutions are at odds with the very people they claim to represent. “By 2020,” writes al-Gharbi, “highly educated white liberals tended to provide more ‘woke’ responses to racial questions than the average Black or Hispanic person.” We’ll talk about how this happened, why it causes social and political chaos, and how to have better policy conversations.

Please join us for this timely discussion! We’ll gather at the Blue Building, located at 222 E. 46th St. in Midtown Manhattan. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the interview will commence at roughly 7:30 p.m. You can snag a ticket for the interview with Musa al-Gharbi, which includes a Q&A, below. Beer, wine softs, and light fare will be served.
