Reason Speakeasy: Martin Gurri

November 18 @ 7:00 pm 9:30 pm

The next Reason Speakeasy is set for Monday, November 18, featuring a discussion with Mercatus Center visiting fellow and former CIA analyst Martin Gurri, whose decade-old The Revolt of the Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium remains one of the most important guides to the 21st century. The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy in an age of intellectual conformity and groupthink. The event doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview With Nick Gillespie.

Released in 2014, Gurri’s analysis of social media and geopolitics was both prescient and prophetic. He explained how Twitter and other platforms empowered ordinary people to resist control from above and anticipated the rise of former President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Brexit, while underscoring that it is easier to tear down established governments and institutions than to create them anew. In a recent piece in Discourse, “Mistaking Leviathan for God,” he described a “crisis of representation” in American society which has permitted politics to replace many traditional institutions as an avenue for meaning and transcendence. His insights make him the perfect guest to discuss the new realignments, opportunities, and dangers forming here and abroad in the wake of the 2024 election.
