The American Dream Coalition, an organization of grass roots activists supporting market-based approaches to land-use, development, and transportation, has released an 8-page Citizen’s Guide to Transportation Reauthorization. This is an excellent summary of the major issues, and a great resource for citizens, journalists, and elected officials.
Among the topics covered are:
- The role of the gas tax;
- Travel trends by transportation mode and income;
- Costs per mile of using rail, cars, and buses;
- Subsidies and construction costs for transportation modes; and
- Energy efficiency.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t also plug my own book as important background for understanding the importance of this round of reauthorization: Mobility First: A New Vision for Transportation in a Globally Competitive 21st Century.
Reason Foundation has published extensive work on reauthorization as well.
