About the Role

Reason is looking for a Deputy Managing Editor to oversee our team of junior-level writers and interns. You will manage the editorial process for this group from pitches to publication, ensuring all content meets Reason’s standards and is delivered on time. This position also includes opportunities to write for Reason’s online and print publications. 

This role is ideal for someone with an editing or program/project management background. To be successful, you will need solid copy-editing skills, an in-depth understanding of politics and public policy from a libertarian worldview, and a passion for shaping young minds. Being based in Washington, D.C., is preferred, but not required. Those wishing to work virtually are welcome to apply. 

Responsibilities

  • Train and mentor new junior-level writers and editors
  • Assign stories as appropriate
  • Manage content creation tasks, ensuring deadlines are met and content is delivered on time
  • Manage the editorial calendar, ensuring that content is planned and scheduled effectively
  • Perform copy-editing on quick-turnaround news items for Reason.com
  • Edit and proofread content for accuracy, clarity, and adherence to style guidelines
  • Research and fact-check as needed
  • Collaborate with editorial staff to help refine longer-form pieces for Reason’s print edition

Qualifications

  • Three to five years of experience in journalism and/or editing 
  • Management experience is preferred
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills, with the ability to guide and inspire young professionals
  • Excellent copy-editing skills
  • Solid grasp of journalistic practices
  • Sharp organizational and writing skills
  • Obsessive attention to detail
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and provide constructive feedback
  • Alignment with Reason’s mission
