Split decision in Iowa

Seventeen of 32 Iowa communities passed ballot measures yesterday to allow local municipal utilities to create telecommunications operations. The propositions permit utilities to set up boards to investigate the feasibility of municipal broadband, but do not commit resources or authorize financing of projects. Referenda passed in Dubuque and Mason City, while Des Moines, Altoona and Windsor Heights were among the communities that voted no. The Des Moines Register covers the vote here.
