Apparently, New York’s political class isn’t too keen on the Davis recall. Said former NYC Mayor Ed Koch: “We don’t want to change the normal way of elections … You don’t want a honky-tonk European parliamentary government that falls so often and has so many prime ministers you can’t remember their names.” One governor recalled every 80 years—I don’t think we’ll have much trouble remembering names. Mario Cuomo even said the recall is “a little bit too much democracy.” Too much democracy? What about the “small d” democratic values that are supposed to inspire the “big D” Democratic party? Oh right, the masses are supposed to rise up, organize, and demand an expanded welfare state. “The people” aren’t supposed to punish a spend-happy governor who orchestrated a budgetary bait-and-switch. This recall is going against the script.
