For most people Labor Day is a 3-day weekend, or perhaps commemorates back-to-school. In the wonk world, it is about unions. And since the majority of union members in the US are now government workers, it is about them.
How far from the ostensible origins of the holiday to celebrate the hard working men and women who helped create America’s prosperity with their hard work.
Is that what you think of when you think of government workers? To be sure, some of them work very hard, and some of them provide services most of us greatly value. But alas, for everyone of those there is some bureaucratic slug or worthless functionary sucking wealth and productivity out of our economy.
The costs of those government workers have already passed sustainable levels. And don’t get me started on their salaries.
