The Wildlife Habitat Council has once again recognized that an oil company can drill oil and still do an outstanding job of preserving habitat and protecting species. The Elk Hills Conservation Area is owned by Occidental Petroleum. Lots of endangered species live in the Area, including the San Joaquin kit fox, the giant kangaroo rat and the San Joaquin antelope squirrel. The federal government had protected 7,075 acres of the are before it sold the petroleum reserve to Oxy, and Oxy has increased the protected acres to 7,801.
