How many light bulbs does it take to fill a shoebox?

As the deadline for bills to be introduced in the California legislature came and went last week, many noted a promising frontrunner for the wackiest bill of the year: the How Many Legislators Does it Take to Change a Light Bulb Act (AB722). The bill, which would ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs in the state beginning in 2012, was brought to us by Assemblymember Lloyd Levine (D-Van Nuys), who last year sponsored the legislative crackdown on plastic grocery bags. This legislation and similar “if you can’t beat them, ban them” proposals announced recently in New Jersey, Ontario and Australia are intended to boost sales of compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs).
