Cutting Defense Spending

Yesterday I appeared on Freedom Watch with Judge Napolitano to discuss cutting defense spending. My main view here is that we need to think about cutting defense not in aggregate figures, but rather on individual needs for spending. For instance, how many aircraft carriers do we need? We have 11—same as the rest of the world combined. Or, how many foreign bases do we need? Simply put, if we start with a blank slate and force defense hawks to, well, defend each expense we are more likely to wind up with total cuts that are more than the bottom line we are aiming at and in a more effective and less contentious way. Okay, who am I kidding, it is going to be contentious.
