Reason’s Nick Gillespie interviews Steven Heller, author of Growing Up Underground: A Memoir of Counterculture New York
About this event
Join Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie for a live taping of The Reason Interview podcast on Thursday, November 3, at New York’s Blue Building theater.
Doors open at 6pm, interview starts at 7pm sharp, program ends at 8.30pm. Reception before and after.
The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy in an age of cancel culture and thought police.
Nick will interview Steven Heller, the legendary graphic designer and author of the phenomenal new book Growing Up Underground: A Memoir of Underground New York. Steve started out in the late 1960s, working at bleeding-edge, alternative outlets like The New York Free Press and Screw magazine before becoming the art director at The New York Times op-ed page and book review section.
A longtime faculty member at the School of Visual Arts, Steve brings an irreverent and uniquely knowledgeable perspective to discussions of how alternative and establishment publications influence social and cultural change. A fierce defender of the First Amendment, he didn’t just witness the past half-century of boundary-busting changes to the media industry, he helped it all jump off the page and grab our attention.
It’s going to be a great evening of conversation and camaraderie. We’ll have beer, wine, soft drinks, and appetizers available before and after the event, so there will be plenty of time to talk about Growing Up Underground and anything else that’s on your mind.
