Reason Speakeasy: Richard Reeves
Reason’s Nick Gillespie interviews Richard V. Reeves, author of Of Boys and Men.
About this event
Join Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie for a live taping of The Reason Interview podcast on Thursday, October 6, at New York’s Blue Building theater.
Doors open at 6pm, interview starts at 7pm sharp, program ends at 8.30pm. Reception before and after.
The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy in an age of cancel culture and thought police.
Nick will interview Richard V. Reeves, a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution and the author of Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What To Do About It. Richard’s book wrestles with one of the most pressing social and cultural issues of our time: Boys and men are struggling in profound ways that affect all of society. They are increasingly less likely to finish high school and college than their female counterparts and now earn 15 percent fewer bachelor degrees than women do–a larger gap than when Title IX laws were passed in the early 1970s to help women gain parity with men.
Men’s earnings and employment rates have declined over the past decades and they are far more likely to be on disability and present a wide variety of psychological and antisocial issues too. Traditional ideas about masculinity have been exploded–almost always for the good!–but what comes next remains unclear, often with really bad outcomes, and not just for those of us with XY chromosomes. In Of Boys and Men , Richard posits solutions that will benefit men, women, and children.
It’s going to be a great evening of conversation and camaraderie. We’ll have beer, wine, soft drinks, and light snacks available before and after the event, so there will be plenty of time to talk about Of Boys and Men and anything else that’s on your mind.
