SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Jennifer Burns
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, December 12\, the Reason Speakeasy will feature Stanford University historian Jennifer Burns about The Last Conservative\, her definitive\, highly praised biography of Milton Friedman\, who was arguably not just the most influential free-market economist of the 20th century but the central figure in building the intellectual coalition that successfully challenged Keynesian economics and the top-down rule of experts in so many aspects of our lives. \n\n\n\nHost Nick Gillespie and Burns will discuss Friedman’s conceptual breakthroughs in economics\, his ahead-of-his-time collaboration with women\, his role in popularizing free-market economics through his columns in Newsweek and the TV series Free To Choose\, his controversial engagements with politicians such as Richard Nixon and Augusto Pinochet\, and his role in ending the military draft and championing school choice. \n\n\n\nThe Reason Speakeasy is a monthly\, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy. It doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie podcast. Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author. \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, December 12\, 2023 \n\n\n\nDoors at 6:30 p.m.\, program at 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere: The Blue Building\, 222 E. 46th St. \n\n\n\nYour ticket for the evening includes beer\, wine\, soft drinks\, and a buffet of light bites.

SUMMARY:Bitcoin\, Bathhouses\, and the Future of Energy
DESCRIPTION:Critics of bitcoin say it’s a massive waste of energy\, with The New York Times earlier this year accusing bitcoin miners of causing “immense pollution.” \n\n\n\nBut what if this growing industry is actually the key to making clean energy profitable? \n\n\n\nA new Reason documentary explores the ways that bitcoin mining is already changing the way businesses and governments use and think about energy: A spa in Brooklyn recycles the heat from miners to warm its pools. A major utility provider in Texas counts on miners to stabilize its electric grid. A small town partners with a bitcoin miner to bring down electricity costs for its residents. \n\n\n\nJoin Reason’s Nick Gillespie for a viewing of the 30-minute documentary\, followed by a live discussion with Reason’s Zach Weismueller\, Human Rights Foundation’s Alex Gladstein\, Pubkey’s Thomas Pacchia\, and Jason Goodman the owner of a Bitcoin-heated bathhouse in Brooklyn\, about Bitcoin\, bathhouses\, and the future of energy. Then join us for an informal afterparty at PubKey\, New York’s premiere bitcoin bar. \n\n\n\nThis event will be recorded for future use. \n\n\n\nTicket price includes light appetizers and access to a cash bar. Smoking allowed in backyard area. \n\n\n\nViewing: Sovereign House\, 185 East Broadway\, New York\, NY\, 10002 \n\n\n\nAfter Party: Pubkey\, 85 Washington Place (near Washington Square and 6th Avenue) \n\n\n\nBuy Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Anticipating the Future with Virginia Postrel and James Pethokoukis
DESCRIPTION:When you were a kid\, did you think The Jetsons was the future? \n\n\n\nThe popular cartoon\, which predicted interactive television (Zoom calls!)\, robot maids (Roombas\, which don’t approach Rosie’s room-cleaning skills)\, and flying cars (still way in the future!) was set in 2062\, which is less than 40 years away. We have a lot to accomplish between then and now if we want to live in the vision that Hanna-Barbera predicted—but perhaps our goals have changed? \n\n\n\nOn Monday\, October 16\, please join Reason Editor in Chief Katherine Mangu-Ward and two of today’s most interesting and opinionated thinkers for a spirited discussion of the cultural conditions that drive progress. Acclaimed author (and former Reason editor in chief) Virginia Postrel—who isn’t a Jetsons’ fan—and American Enterprise Institute scholar James Pethokoukis—who is—will consider how breakthroughs in technology and ideas move us forward. \n\n\n\nPlease register for this lively evening by October 9.

SUMMARY:Welcome To the Psychedelic Renaissance\, Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:“Welcome to the psychedelic ‘20s!” says Rick Doblin\, the founder and head of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelics Studies (MAPS)\, a nonprofit that has been pushing for FDA approval of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD and other indications for almost 40 years. He predicts that should happen within a year’s time\, even as states such as Oregon and Colorado move ahead with decriminalizing plant-based psychedelics and other drugs. \n\n\n\nDoblin is one of the main figures in Reason’s new documentary\, Welcome To the Psychedelic Renaissance\, which was filmed at MAPS’ Psychedelic Sciences Conference held this June in Denver. A reported 13\,000 researchers\, artists\, activists\, thrill-seekers\, and venture capitalists gathered to discuss all aspects of an underground movement that is fast gaining mainstream and legal acceptance. But will today’s psychedelic renaissance succeed\, or fall victim to the cultural and political problems that undermined its forerunner in the 1960s? \n\n\n\nJoin Reason’s Nick Gillespie for a viewing of the 30-minute documentary\, followed by a live discussion with Rick Doblin about the past\, present\, and future of psychedelics\, drug policy\, and drug use. Audience Q&A. This event will be recorded for future use. \n\n\n\nTicket price includes light appetizers and access to a cash bar. Smoking allowed in backyard area. \n\n\n\nEstablished in 1968 as the nation’s libertarian magazine of “free minds and free markets\,” Reason has called for the legalization of drugs since its first issue. Go here for our continuing coverage of psychedelics.
