He looked up and saw a government agent pointing a gun at him. \n\n\n\nLacey\, who co-founded the classified ad site Backpage with his business partner Jim Larkin\, was under arrest on charges of money laundering\, conspiracy\, and facilitating prostitution online . As publishers of the user-generated ad site\, Lacey and Larkin should have been protected by the First Amendment and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act\, which immunizes web services from liability for content posted by their users. Moreover\, Backpage banned ads for anything illegal\, including prostitution. Staff were careful to keep ads posted by or featuring minors off the site as best they could and cooperated extensively with law enforcement. So as the charges piled up\, Lacey and Larkin refused to cut a deal.On Tuesday\, July 23\, join us for the premiere of Reason’s latest documentary about the impact that the Backpage case has had on the lives of Lacey\, Larkin\, and sex workers who relied on the service for their own safety\, as well as the case’s implications for online speech of all sorts. Following the 30-minute documentary\, Nick Gillespie will talk with Reason Senior Editor Elizabeth Nolan Brown\, who co-produced the documentary\, to discuss the legal and constitutional aspects of this years-long prosecution. Also joining the conversation will be Old Pros’ founder Kaytlin Bailey\, an advocate for the decriminalization of sex work\, who appears in the documentary. \n\n\n\nThe documentary will be viewed at Sovereign House\, located at 185 E. His new book\, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness\, is a deep dive into how social and technological shifts have harmed younger Americans and a call to cultural and political action when it comes to social media and smartphones. \n\n\n\nThe event is being held at the Blue Building\, located at 222 E. 46th St. in Midtown. Anthony (Tony) Mills is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute\, where he studies the federal government’s role in science and innovation and the relationship between scientific expertise and democratic governance. Concurrently a senior fellow at the Pepperdine School of Public Policy and a scholar associate of the Society of Catholic Scientists\, Dr. Mills was previously a resident senior fellow at the R Street Institute and an editor for numerous publications. His writings have appeared in Politico\, National Review\, Law & Liberty\, National Affairs\, Issues in Science and Technology\, and various peer-reviewed journals. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. \n\n\n\nFor the negative: \n\n\n\nTerence Kealey trained originally in medicine (MB BS/MD University of London) and biochemistry (DPhil/PhD University of Oxford)\, and between 1988 and 2001 he lectured in clinical biochemistry at the University of Cambridge. Between 2001 and 2014 he was the vice-chancellor (president) of the University of Buckingham\, since when he has been a research fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington DC.  During the 1980s he noted that governments’ cuts in their science budgets only stimulated the private funding of research\, which more than compensated for the original cuts\, so he concluded that research is not a public good but\, rather\, a contribution good.
