SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Leigh Stein and Julius Taranto
DESCRIPTION:Is satire possible anymore in a world that outstrips our imagination on a daily—or maybe even hourly—basis? \n\n\n\nThat’s the topic of the next Reason Speakeasy\, a monthly unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy in an age of intellectual conformity and groupthink. The event doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview\, hosted by Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie. \n\n\n\nIn 1961\, Philip Roth famously opined that the American novelist “has his hands full in trying to understand\, and then describe\, and then make credible much of the American reality. It stupefies\, it sickens\, it infuriates\, and finally it is even a kind of embarrassment to one’s own meager imagination….Who\, for example\, could have invented Charles Van Doren? Roy Cohn and David Schine?…Dwight David Eisenhower?” \n\n\n\nTo which 2025 says confidently: Hold my beer. \n\n\n\nGillespie will talk with rising young writers Leigh Stein and Julius Taranto\, each of whom has recently published extremely funny and spirited novels. Stein’s critically acclaimed Self Care took a withering behind-the-scenes look at a women’s wellness startup; her forthcoming novel\, If You’re Seeing This\, It’s Meant for You\, is set at a Los Angeles social media “hype house.” Taranto is a recovering lawyer whose 2023 debut novel\, How I Won a Nobel Prize\, satirized a fictional university funded by a shadowy billionaire and staffed exclusively by academics who had been canceled. It was named among the best books of the year by The Times\, Vogue\, and Vox. \n\n\n\nThe evening’s conversation will take the measure of a widely pronounced vibe shift by which artists feel emboldened once again to slay sacred cows with impunity and explore whether markets for books\, movies\, plays\, music\, and other forms of creative expression are capable of supporting a new era of satire\, parody\, and self-examination. \n\n\n\nThe Reason Speakeasy will be hosted at the Blue Building at 222 E 46th St. in Midtown Manhattan. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and Nick’s discussion with Leigh and Julius will begin at 7:30 p.m.\, followed by audience Q&A. Beer\, wine\, soft drinks\, and snacks will be served.

SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Martin Gurri
DESCRIPTION:The next Reason Speakeasy is set for Monday\, November 18\, featuring a discussion with Mercatus Center visiting fellow and former CIA analyst Martin Gurri\, whose decade-old The Revolt of the Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium remains one of the most important guides to the 21st century. The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly\, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy in an age of intellectual conformity and groupthink. The event doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview With Nick Gillespie. \n\n\n\nReleased in 2014\, Gurri’s analysis of social media and geopolitics was both prescient and prophetic. He explained how Twitter and other platforms empowered ordinary people to resist control from above and anticipated the rise of former President Donald Trump\, French President Emmanuel Macron\, and Brexit\, while underscoring that it is easier to tear down established governments and institutions than to create them anew. In a recent piece in Discourse\, “Mistaking Leviathan for God\,” he described a “crisis of representation” in American society which has permitted politics to replace many traditional institutions as an avenue for meaning and transcendence. His insights make him the perfect guest to discuss the new realignments\, opportunities\, and dangers forming here and abroad in the wake of the 2024 election. Get your tickets for this important conversation today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Reason Speakeasy will be hosted at Maxwell Social\, located at 135 Watts St. in Tribeca\, Manhattan. (Please note the different location from past Reason Speakeasy gatherings.)Doors open at 7 p.m.\, and the interview will commence at 7:30 p.m.\, followed by audience Q&A. Food and drinks will be served.

SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Musa al-Gharbi
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to announce the next Reason Speakeasy on Thursday\, October 24\, featuring a discussion with Stony Brook University and Heterodox Academy sociologist Musa al-Gharbi who will discuss his forthcoming book We Have Never Been Woke: The Cultural Contradictions of a New Elite. The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly\, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy. The event doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie. \n\n\n\nWe Have Never Been Woke examines how a new progressive elite uses the language of social justice to gain more power and status—without actually helping the marginalized or disadvantaged. This is a cutting and deeply researched critique of how the leaders of our educational\, legal\, media\, NGO\, and advocacy institutions are at odds with the very people they claim to represent. “By 2020\,” writes al-Gharbi\, “highly educated white liberals tended to provide more ‘woke’ responses to racial questions than the average Black or Hispanic person.” We’ll talk about how this happened\, why it causes social and political chaos\, and how to have better policy conversations.   \n\n\n\nPlease join us for this timely discussion! We’ll gather at the Blue Building\, located at 222 E. 46th St. in Midtown Manhattan. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the interview will commence at roughly 7:30 p.m. You can snag a ticket for the interview with Musa al-Gharbi\, which includes a Q&A\, below. Beer\, wine softs\, and light fare will be served.

SUMMARY:Premiere of Reason’s Backpage Documentary & panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, journalist Mike Lacey was working at his desk when movement outside his office door caught his eye. He looked up and saw a government agent pointing a gun at him. \n\n\n\nLacey\, who co-founded the classified ad site Backpage with his business partner Jim Larkin\, was under arrest on charges of money laundering\, conspiracy\, and facilitating prostitution online . As publishers of the user-generated ad site\, Lacey and Larkin should have been protected by the First Amendment and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act\, which immunizes web services from liability for content posted by their users. Moreover\, Backpage banned ads for anything illegal\, including prostitution. Staff were careful to keep ads posted by or featuring minors off the site as best they could and cooperated extensively with law enforcement. So as the charges piled up\, Lacey and Larkin refused to cut a deal.On Tuesday\, July 23\, join us for the premiere of Reason’s latest documentary about the impact that the Backpage case has had on the lives of Lacey\, Larkin\, and sex workers who relied on the service for their own safety\, as well as the case’s implications for online speech of all sorts. Following the 30-minute documentary\, Nick Gillespie will talk with Reason Senior Editor Elizabeth Nolan Brown\, who co-produced the documentary\, to discuss the legal and constitutional aspects of this years-long prosecution. Also joining the conversation will be Old Pros’ founder Kaytlin Bailey\, an advocate for the decriminalization of sex work\, who appears in the documentary. \n\n\n\nThe documentary will be viewed at Sovereign House\, located at 185 E. Broadway on the Lower East Side\, across from Seward Park. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will start at 7:00 p.m sharp; the panel discussion will take place immediately after. Tickets are $10 and include the film screening\, the panel discussion\, and light appetizers. There is a cash bar at the venue\, and smoking is allowed in the backyard area. \n\n\n\nThe Backpage saga serves as a harrowing reminder of how unyielding government power can devastate the lives of individuals fighting for freedom. Sadly\, the story isn’t over yet. After a mistrial\, a second trial in 2023\, and Jim Larkin’s suicide earlier this year\, Lacey will be sentenced on the remaining charges on July 9. You can also read Reason’s coverage of the case here.

SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Corey DeAngelis
DESCRIPTION:The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly\, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free expression and heterodox thinking. It doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview with Nick Gillespie podcast and takes place at one of the coolest settings in Manhattan. \n\n\n\nThe guest this time is school choice activist Corey DeAngelis where he will discuss his provocative new book\, The Parent Revolution: Rescuing Your Kids from the Radicals Ruining Our Schools. A senior fellow at the American Federation for Children and a former education policy analyst at the Reason Foundation (the nonprofit that publishes Reason magazine)\, Corey has rightly been called “the most effective school choice advocate since Milton Friedman.” His new book explains why K-12 education failed so badly before and during Covid and how to fix it once and for all by making the needs of parents and students the central concern of schooling. If you have school-age kids or care about how your tax dollars are being misspent\, you’ll want to hear what Corey has to say. \n\n\n\nThe Reason Speakeasy takes place at the Blue Building\, located at 222 East 46th Street\, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.\, program starts at 7:00 p.m. and features audience Q&A. \n\n\n\nTicket includes beer\, wine\, soft drinks\, a buffet of snacks and appetizers\, and an evening of camaraderie and conversation.
