Skousen writes about Franklin’s advice on running a successful business and how to win over your enemies\, and his warning of a potential political crisis that could end America’s greatness. \n\n\n\n\n“Of all the Founding Fathers\, Benjamin Franklin is my favorite. SUMMARY:Broken Rails: What Went Wrong with LA Metro
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reception and conversation with Reason Foundation’s Baruch Feigenbaum and Independent Institute’s Kristian Fors as they unpack the findings behind the latest California Golden Fleece® Award\, granted to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) for its spiraling costs\, rampant crime\, and failed expansion projects. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a city famed for its car culture\, the LA Metro was meant to offer Angelenos a modern\, reliable transit system. Instead\, it’s become a case study in how not to run public transportation. Riders now face soaring crime rates\, unreliable service\, bloated construction costs\, and a bureaucracy more focused on image than on outcomes. \n\n\n\nFrom shocking safety failures to rail projects that cost more per mile than anywhere else in the country\, this Golden Fleece® report exposes how poor governance and misplaced priorities have derailed the agency’s mission\, and what reforms could put it back on track. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this eye-opening discussion about one of the most costly and dangerous transit systems in the country\, and what it reveals about California’s broader infrastructure crisis. \n\n\n\nHosted in collaboration with the Independent Institute. \n\n\n\nWhen:December 1\, 2025 |  6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere:Reason Foundation’s L.A. SUMMARY:Mini Doc Screening — "The Socialist Housing Plan for New York"
DESCRIPTION:Join Reason and the Manhattan Institute for a screening of the new mini documentary “The Socialist Housing Plan for New York.” Following the screening\, Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie will host a panel discussion with the Reason producer Justin Zuckerman and Manhattan Institute policy expert John Ketcham. \n\n\n\nThe film features profiles of tenants\, landlords\, a private investigator\, and Harvard economist Edward Glaeser. It shows how policies like “freeze the rent” are turning New York into a city exclusively for the rich or lucky. \n\n\n\nIf elected mayor\, Zohran Mamdani says he’ll “freeze the rent” for a million regulated units. But this policy would make it even harder to find an affordable place to live in New York amid a historic housing crisis. \n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\n\nJustin Zuckerman\, Producer of Documentary title\, Producer\, Reason\n\n\n\nJohn Ketcham\, Legal Policy Fellow and Director of Cities\, Manhattan Institute\n\n\n\nModerated by Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie\n\n\n\n\nWHEN:Wednesday\, October 296:00pm- doors open6:20pm- screening and panel7:30pm- reception \n\n\n\nWHERE:Village Underground130 W 3rd StNew York\, NY 10012 \n\n\n\nWhen the panel wraps up\, we’ll continue the discussion with a reception at a nearby bar. SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Elizabeth Nolan Brown on the MAHA Movement
DESCRIPTION:Trad Wives and Tallow Fries: How the Wellness Wars Flipped Health and Food Politics Upside Down \n\n\n\nWhat happens when the culture wars go paleo? \n\n\n\nOnly a dozen years ago\, GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin defiantly sipped from a Big Gulp and Fox News’ Sean Hannity declared\, “I like junk food.” Republicans and conservatives denounced First Lady Michelle Obama’s school-lunch crusade and New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s holy war against salt and supersized sodas as the worst sort of nanny-state excesses. \n\n\n\nNow\, President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services\, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\, is leading the MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) movement and calling for a return to tallow fries and an end to synthetic food dyes. \n\n\n\nAs Reason Senior Editor Elizabeth Nolan Brown says in Reason magazine’s July cover story\, it’s as if the nutritional fixations of hipster Brooklyn in the aughts have switched sides in the culture wars. \n\n\n\nJoin Brown and Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie for a provocative live conversation about how the American right flipped the script on health\, wellness\, and food freedom. What does RFK Jr.’s MAHA movement reveal about the strange new alliances between alt-wellness influencers\, culture warriors\, and government regulators? Is this a libertarian opportunity to dismantle the medical-industrial complex or a new flavor of nanny-state authoritarianism? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom trad wives to protein-maxxing to alternative medicine\, we’ll unpack the realignment of food politics and how to think about the future of public health\, individual freedom\, and the weird shadows being cast by the latest food pyramid. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the Blue Building\, located at 222 East 46th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Doors open at 7 p.m.\, and Nick’s conversation with Brown will begin at 7:30 p.m.\, followed by audience Q&A and a reception. Tickets include beer\, wine\, soft drinks\, and a selection of healthy and unhealthy appetizers.

SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Leigh Stein and Julius Taranto
DESCRIPTION:Is satire possible anymore in a world that outstrips our imagination on a daily—or maybe even hourly—basis? \n\n\n\nThat’s the topic of the next Reason Speakeasy\, a monthly unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy in an age of intellectual conformity and groupthink. The event doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview\, hosted by Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie. \n\n\n\nIn 1961\, Philip Roth famously opined that the American novelist “has his hands full in trying to understand\, and then describe\, and then make credible much of the American reality. It stupefies\, it sickens\, it infuriates\, and finally it is even a kind of embarrassment to one’s own meager imagination….Who\, for example\, could have invented Charles Van Doren? Roy Cohn and David Schine?…Dwight David Eisenhower?” \n\n\n\nTo which 2025 says confidently: Hold my beer. \n\n\n\nGillespie will talk with rising young writers Leigh Stein and Julius Taranto\, each of whom has recently published extremely funny and spirited novels. Stein’s critically acclaimed Self Care took a withering behind-the-scenes look at a women’s wellness startup; her forthcoming novel\, If You’re Seeing This\, It’s Meant for You\, is set at a Los Angeles social media “hype house.” Taranto is a recovering lawyer whose 2023 debut novel\, How I Won a Nobel Prize\, satirized a fictional university funded by a shadowy billionaire and staffed exclusively by academics who had been canceled. It was named among the best books of the year by The Times\, Vogue\, and Vox. \n\n\n\nThe evening’s conversation will take the measure of a widely pronounced vibe shift by which artists feel emboldened once again to slay sacred cows with impunity and explore whether markets for books\, movies\, plays\, music\, and other forms of creative expression are capable of supporting a new era of satire\, parody\, and self-examination. \n\n\n\nThe Reason Speakeasy will be hosted at the Blue Building at 222 E 46th St. in Midtown Manhattan. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and Nick’s discussion with Leigh and Julius will begin at 7:30 p.m.\, followed by audience Q&A. Beer\, wine\, soft drinks\, and snacks will be served.
