SUMMARY:"Benjamin Franklin\, the World's Most Versatile Genius"
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join friends of Reason Foundation for a celebration of Benjamin Franklin’s birthday and a discussion of The Greatest American: Benjamin Franklin\, The World’s Most Versatile Genius\, the latest book by Mark Skousen\, producer of FreedomFest and Doti-Spogli Endowed Chair of Free Enterprise at Chapman University. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the book\, Skousen (who is a direct descendant of Franklin’s) explains why Franklin is considered the most modern of the Founders and what Franklin would like and not like about today’s America. Skousen writes about Franklin’s advice on running a successful business and how to win over your enemies\, and his warning of a potential political crisis that could end America’s greatness. \n\n\n\n\n“Of all the Founding Fathers\, Benjamin Franklin is my favorite. He was America’s first conscious capitalist\, achieving financial independence by meeting the needs and well-being of his customers. He then used his wealth to improve the community and played a crucial role in saving the country during its darkest hours. More than any other writer\, Mark Skousen illustrates why Franklin has come to be regarded\, both by citizens and historians\, as the greatest American.” —John Mackey\, Former CEO\, Whole Foods Market \n\n\n\n\nPlease join Reason Foundation as we celebrate America’s 250th year with a discussion of the legacy of one of America’s most notable entrepreneurs! We’ll enjoy brief remarks from the author\, light refreshments\, and good company. After Skousen’s lecture\, there will be an opportunity to purchase a signed book—and with your purchase\, you’ll also receive a rare Franklin stamp! \n\n\n\nWhen:Saturday\, January 17\, 2026 |  2:00pm- 5:00pm \n\n\n\nWhere:Reason Foundation’s L.A. SUMMARY:Broken Rails: What Went Wrong with LA Metro
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reception and conversation with Reason Foundation’s Baruch Feigenbaum and Independent Institute’s Kristian Fors as they unpack the findings behind the latest California Golden Fleece® Award\, granted to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) for its spiraling costs\, rampant crime\, and failed expansion projects. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a city famed for its car culture\, the LA Metro was meant to offer Angelenos a modern\, reliable transit system. Instead\, it’s become a case study in how not to run public transportation. Riders now face soaring crime rates\, unreliable service\, bloated construction costs\, and a bureaucracy more focused on image than on outcomes. \n\n\n\nFrom shocking safety failures to rail projects that cost more per mile than anywhere else in the country\, this Golden Fleece® report exposes how poor governance and misplaced priorities have derailed the agency’s mission\, and what reforms could put it back on track. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this eye-opening discussion about one of the most costly and dangerous transit systems in the country\, and what it reveals about California’s broader infrastructure crisis. \n\n\n\nHosted in collaboration with the Independent Institute. \n\n\n\nWhen:December 1\, 2025 |  6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere:Reason Foundation’s L.A. Office5737 Mesmer Ave.Los Angeles\, CA 90230 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Los Angeles Metro: Unacceptable Crime\, High Costs\, and Unnecessary Expansions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREAD REPORT

SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Elizabeth Nolan Brown on the MAHA Movement
DESCRIPTION:Trad Wives and Tallow Fries: How the Wellness Wars Flipped Health and Food Politics Upside Down \n\n\n\nWhat happens when the culture wars go paleo? \n\n\n\nOnly a dozen years ago\, GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin defiantly sipped from a Big Gulp and Fox News’ Sean Hannity declared\, “I like junk food.” Republicans and conservatives denounced First Lady Michelle Obama’s school-lunch crusade and New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s holy war against salt and supersized sodas as the worst sort of nanny-state excesses. \n\n\n\nNow\, President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services\, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\, is leading the MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) movement and calling for a return to tallow fries and an end to synthetic food dyes. \n\n\n\nAs Reason Senior Editor Elizabeth Nolan Brown says in Reason magazine’s July cover story\, it’s as if the nutritional fixations of hipster Brooklyn in the aughts have switched sides in the culture wars. \n\n\n\nJoin Brown and Reason Editor at Large Nick Gillespie for a provocative live conversation about how the American right flipped the script on health\, wellness\, and food freedom. What does RFK Jr.’s MAHA movement reveal about the strange new alliances between alt-wellness influencers\, culture warriors\, and government regulators? Is this a libertarian opportunity to dismantle the medical-industrial complex or a new flavor of nanny-state authoritarianism? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom trad wives to protein-maxxing to alternative medicine\, we’ll unpack the realignment of food politics and how to think about the future of public health\, individual freedom\, and the weird shadows being cast by the latest food pyramid. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll meet at the Blue Building\, located at 222 East 46th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Doors open at 7 p.m.\, and Nick’s conversation with Brown will begin at 7:30 p.m.\, followed by audience Q&A and a reception. Tickets include beer\, wine\, soft drinks\, and a selection of healthy and unhealthy appetizers.

SUMMARY:Reason Speakeasy: Susannah Cahalan on 'The Acid Queen'
DESCRIPTION:Join Reason’s Nick Gillespie at the Reason Speakeasy on Tuesday\, June 3\, when he’ll talk with New York Times bestselling author Susannah Cahalan. \n\n\n\nThe Reason Speakeasy is a monthly unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of freethinking and heterodoxy in an age of intellectual conformity and groupthink. The event doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview With Nick Gillespie. \n\n\n\nNick and Susannah will discuss her latest book\, The Acid Queen: The Psychedelic Life and Counterculture Rebellion of Rosemary Woodruff Leary\, which brings to light the extraordinary and long-overlooked story of Rosemary Woodruff Leary—a woman who was far more than just Timothy Leary’s wife. Rosemary was a beatnik\, psychonaut\, countercultural trailblazer\, and an important part of the psychedelic revolution of the 1960s and ’70s. She worked alongside her husband on his books and speeches and ultimately risked everything for the safety of fellow psychedelic pioneers. \n\n\n\nThe Reason Speakeasy will be co-hosted with the Psychedelic Assembly at the Blue Building at 222 E 46th St. in Midtown Manhattan. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.\, and Nick’s discussion with Susannah will begin at 7:00 p.m. It will be followed by an audience Q&A and a reception. Tickets can be purchased through the Psychedelic Assembly here\, using the code REASON for $10 off each ticket.
