Rise of Robots?

As the year 2019, with its booming job market, comes to a close, experts in artificial intelligence are warning us about the prospect of soaring unemployment in the the 2020s. While technology continues to make our lives more affordable and convenient, they warn that our embrace of technology might be a bargain with a robotic devil.

AI expert Martin Ford, author of The New York Times bestseller The Rise of Robots, has written: “The future has lots of robots, few jobs for humans.”

But as others point out, history has been marked by such warnings since the early days of the industrial revolution. Is this time different? Are we finally on the brink of an automation-induced crisis of widespread joblessness?

On Monday, January 6, decide for yourself at the Soho Forum debate on the resolution: Robotics will soon lead to widespread joblessness and the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few.

Martin Ford will take the affirmative, and Antony Sammeroff, author of Universal Basic Income – For and Againstwill take the negative.

And remember that all debates at the Subculture Theater provide food-for-thought as soon as you arrive – prepared and served not by robots, but by a staff supervised by Soho Forum Director Gene Epstein’s wife, artist Hisako Kobayashi!
