What is a Libertarian Position on Abortion?

In the perennial debate on abortion, Professor Walter Block has received a lot of attention for his moral theory of evictionism.

Block argues, invoking the moral theories of Murray Rothbard, that since “no being has a right to live, unbidden, as a parasite within or upon some person’s body,” a woman has the right to evict a fetus at any time from her body upon which it trespasses.  But Block also goes beyond Rothbard by imposing certain moral obligations on the pregnant woman.

Independent writer and researcher Kerry Baldwin, also deeply influenced by Rothbardian ethics, disagrees.

We’re bringing the abortion debate to the Soho Forum. Dr. Block will take the affirmative, and Kerry Baldwin the negative, on the resolution:

While a pregnant woman should be legally required to help the fetus survive outside of her body whenever that is possible, she retains the legal right to evict the fetus at any time during her pregnancy

This debate will be held on Sunday, December 8 at 3:00 pm — the Soho Forum’s very first matinee event.
