Mission

Movements wither when their members don’t discuss ideas with each other in an open, honest and friendly manner. Typically, conferences and seminars have served as the venues for intellectual exchange. But advances in internet technology offer new ways of supplementing these traditional forums and, taking advantage of them, Reason Foundation today is launching a new feature on its website called Reason Roundtable.

The purpose of the Reason Roundtable is to serve as a virtual conference site where those seriously engaged in applying free-market, property-rights approaches to real-world problems can present their latest thinking in a sober and reasoned environment. One outcome we seek, obviously, is to influence public policy in the direction of “free markets and free minds” – Reason’s core mission -- and away from government intervention. But, in the process, we also hope to refine and strengthen the fundamentals of free market theory so that we can deploy our ideas more effectively. To this end, besides posting contributions by those in the free-market camp, the Reason Roundtable sometimes would also air – and respond to – intelligent critiques of its positions.

The Reason Roundtable will consist of an Editor’s Essay and two to four submissions from non-Reason voices. Future editions will explore a host of issues involving: the environment – global warming, conservation, water and air pollution; health care – universal coverage, single-payer system; transportation – congestion pricing, private roads, mass transit; good government – state spending limits, outsourcing of government services; the regulatory state – land use restrictions, workplace mandates; and many others.

Reason Roundtable is – and always will be – a work in progress. We encourage our readers to write to reason.roundtable@reason.org with suggestions for future improvements and topics.

Lively yet rational intellectual inquiry is necessary for good policy. But it is also an end in itself. That is what Reason Roundtable will strive to provide.

Shikha Dalmia
Editor, Reason Roundtable
