Budget Woes for Transit Systems Despite Ridership Gains

From The Wall Street Journal:

“Just as mass-transit ridership has reached a historic high, tax revenues that fund rail and bus service have dropped, leaving transit agencies nationwide with huge budget deficits and the prospect of boosting fares.”

The article says transit agencies in New York City, Washington DC, Chicago and San Francisco all face similar budget dilemmas. These are the largest and most used transit systems in the U.S., so transit systems in smaller cities are unlikely to be in any better shape.
