New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein released a report showing that maintenance repairs done by outside contractors at city schools are 46 percent less expensive than work done by school unionized workers. The report was responding to criticism aimed at him after he proposed to eliminate some 486 jobs in favor of private companies doing necessary school repairs. Currently only about 30 percent of the school's maintenance force is contracted all the rest are school employees. Klein's report concluded that, "contractors are more productive," and that contracting out could offer savings of at least $20 million. Check out the article here.
