State Tax Collectors Cry Me a River

The latest twist on the "stimulus."  States are running away from the tax cut part of it as fast as they can. 

Most states tie their tax code to the federal government’s to make it easier for individuals and businesses to fill out their tax forms.


“States need every penny they can corral from their current revenue inflows to bolster their budgets,” said Sujit CanagaRetna, senior fiscal analyst for the Southern Legislative Conference of the Council of State Governments.

See, the thing is THEY need it more than YOU do. Or so they say. States are punting on the tax cuts, the only part of the "stimulus" that really promises to incentivize job creation. How short sighted.Job growth is what leads to increased tax revenue.

Now, upon examining those tax cuts more closely, they are mostly stinkers. Various forms of picking winners, rather than real tax cuts designed to let people keep more of what they earn. Still, none of the states are rejecting the cuts for this reason, instead it is their "need" for the money that motivates them.
